Attaque-ed in Bukit Rimau
Attaque! I’m starting to like this name. Taken after the french word Attaque which means attack, this Asia Pacific’s leading bicycle store from Taiwan has launched its attack plan on Malaysia. The word ‘Attack’ also sends cyclists into a frenzy when someone whizzes by you at top speed especially up a gradient.
Opening it’s second store in Bukit Rimau, Selangor on a Sunday morning, the area was unusually abuzz with 200 cycling enthusiasts including our national cyclist Mariana Mohamad whom had turned up for a short 50km ride to Carey island led by Stanley Hoh. Hoh whom trains in Taiwan, is the first Malaysia cyclist to join Taiwanese UCI Continental Team Gusto which has won many accolades in racing including Tour de Taiwan, Tour de Phillippines and Tour de East Java recently.
So what could be interesting about yet another bicycle shop in Malaysia?
Multiple condiments on the same plate – Akin to our local favourite, Nasi Lemak where you have multiple condiments to compliment the coconut rice, Attaque’s new business model breaks the traditional rule where bike shops mainly carry one bicycle brand. Surprisingly, the new Attaque store was stocked with foldable bicycles, modern city aluminum bicycle, classic steel bicycle apart from the usual road bikes and mountain bikes to serve the different interests in cycling.
Does your bike fit you? – Local bicycle stores usually lack the finesse in providing fitting services to make sure the bike fits you BEFORE you buy it. Quite often, the damage is already done before you buy the bike, sadly I’ve had to learn the hard way in the past but till today, many still suffer this fate. Therefore, it’s heartening to see that Attaque has trained their staff in Retul fitting to help cycling enthusiasts improve performance and comfort on their bikes.
Let’s go touring – Incidentally, I missed out on a cycling tour to Taiwan previously. So I was stoked to hear Attaque Taiwan HQ & Malaysia GM Harry Liao mention in an interview held with him, that they will be organising tours to Taiwan from the Malaysian Attaque bike stores in the near future. He also added his favourite route is from Hua Lian to Tai Tung along Taiwan’s majestic east coast on his road bike. I also read that you could have a chance viewing whales and dolphins there too. What could be better than cycling up to a bike store, and having the whole cycle touring plans laid out for you to explore with insights from other fellow cyclists. I’m sold!
Pink bikes! – My national colours, finally found a range of pink bikes from Gusto’s road bike for women, Dios Vient Mountain bike and even a foldie from the Amis range. Oh and guess what, they have pink helmets from Attaque at RM64! Needless to say, it’s now sitting proudly in my collection. Super happy!
In celebration of their launch, Attaque is offering a free 12-piece starter kit RM1500 with every purchase of a Gusto carbon road bike. To get you all set up right from the get-go, the starter kit will include: a helmet, Gusto cycling jersey, NW Sonic SPD clipless shoes, SPD pedals, front and rear light set, presta valve cap, a saddle bag, a head scarf, water bottle and bottle cage (2 set), 8-in-1 multi tool, tire levers and repair tools.
Generally, the Attaque range of bikes are priced affordably especially for people to get started with their first bike and pursue their love for cycling. More serious enthusiasts would upgrade the specifications for the groupsets, wheels, saddle as most would already do. Give them some time to stock up this place, and I shall be back to poke my nose around, and mingle with the crowd at the store again sometime soon. After all, the bike store is usually a place where you spot a familiar face, strike up a conversation and share some cycling stories. Even if you’re not looking for something, some stories are always ready to be shared.
Borne from the second richest family in Taiwan on the Forbes Taiwan rich list, the Wei family has a stake in Taipei 101, the island’s tallest building; a fried chicken restaurant chain Dicos; and Taiwan Star Telecom, a broadband wireless telecom company besides the Family Mart chain store. It would be intriguing to see how a mogul expands the reach of a bicycle chain store with their depth of experience. More new stores will opening up in Malaysia next year in tandem with Attaque’s aim of having 2,500 stores within the next 3 years across the whole of Asia Pacific.
Alas, my morning ride was worth sacrificing when Miyuki handed out the infamous Taiwan pineapple tarts. Who doesn’t love these melt in your mouth pineapple tarts? Thanks, babe!
