‘Roadie Foldie’ Tern VergeX18 slays the infamous Dragon’s Back
I have a dream. I want to climb the steep terrain, I want to explore the coastal roads, I want to explore towns and get to know their friendly residents, I want to go cycle touring.
Cycle touring with a foldie would be very convenient, and the best part yet? The Verge X18 nicknamed ‘Blue Streak’ can perform as fast as a roadbike, with drop bars for the times you feel like going down low and aero on the downhills. Most importantly, it has double chainrings with the 53/39T FSA Gossamer crankset, while the cassette runs on Shimano Capreo with 9-26T.
Practically, everything you need in that 2×9 speed, to conquer the world even on the steepest of climbs and the fastest of flats.Perfect, for the roadie in me. Once I rotated the unique Syntace VRO stem to the angle and reach, comfortable to my position, I was ready to slay the dragon.
Venture I must, and take the first step towards climbing steep terrain, to slay the dragon at the infamous ‘Dragon Back’ in Puncak Alam. The first climb of this 7km long stretch, is always the toughest among the 4 steep hills.
Imagining I was climbing a picturesque mountain in Taiwan, overlooking a majestic lake, I set the gears into the small chain ring in front and second lightest gear in the rear and I could still climb comfortably.
Cresting the peak, I was apprehensive in descending the steep hill, so I readied my fingers on the brakes to feather them on the way down. The Verge X18 felt stable as I put myself into aero position and enjoyed the descent confidently.
The aero position was a fun familiar feeling, and I couldn’t wait to repeat that, so I looked forward to the next hill, imagining the next big mountain, namely the Alp de Huez after watching too much Tour de France last month. The big 53 chain ring paired up well to maintain fast speeds on the flats. If you were using cleats, the power transfer would be enhanced and you’d find yourself going faster.
Bursting my own cloud nine, I ventured through the quaint village of Kampung Budiman where children play simple games of sticks and stones, while mountain bikers foray in the palm oil estates behind.
This ‘Blue Streak’ definitely has a yearning for adventure and seeks owners who has a need for speed. The roadie in me wishes for a carbon fiber version with lighter wheels as the next big upgrade.
However, this Tern Verge X18 is surprisingly impressive and you could easily overtake roadies on this ‘Blue Streak’. Don’t take my word for it, take it out on a spin, and be impressed.
